Note that these instructions are NOT applicable to the newer McAfee ASAP Managed virusscan products. This page contains instructions on how to update your McAfee VirusScan product. It is important to keep updating the "Dat Files" of this product, so that it knows how to detect and remove new viruses that are appearing on the scene. We recommend that you update the Dat Files at least once a week. Typically, McAfee release a new update every Thursday morning, but they often release them more frequently as new viruses are discovered. Procedure to check what version of the Dat Files are on your system. Right-click on the VirusScan icon in the systray at the bottom right, near the clock (this icon looks like a red "V" on a blue shield). Choose "About" from the menu. Note the Virus Definitions number, and the "Created On" date. If the date is more than a week old, then it's time to update! However, if you have heard of a serious virus threat that has been newly discovered, then it is best to update more frequently, in-case McAfee have released new Virus Definition's earlier than scheduled, to counter the threat (this happens often!). Procedure to update the Dat Files. There are 2 ways this can be done... Procedure 1 - Update from VirusScan software: The VirusScan product has the ability to do updates from within the software. Follow this procedure... Note. Make sure you are connected to the internet first! 1. Go into the VirusScan Console. This is done by either, A) Double clicking the VirusScan Console icon in the systray at the bottom right, near the clock, or ... B) Start, Programs, Network Associates, VirusScan Console. (Note in Windows XP, "All Programs" is the same as "Programs"). 2. Right-Click "Auto Update" and choose "Start" from the menu. It may take a few minutes, depending on your internet connection speed, and it will tell you if it was successful. Note that if this worked, you can also double-click on "Auto Update", then click on "Schedule" to enable automatic updating of the Dat Files, however note that this will only be reliable if you are permanently connected to the internet. Procedure 2 - Update from McAfee's web page: Note. Make sure you are connected to the internet first! 1. Goto McAfee's FTP update page at ftp://ftp.nai.com/licensed/antivirus/datfiles/4.x 2. Decide whether you want to do a DAT update only, or do a "SuperDat" update which includes that DatFiles and also the VirusScan engine software. We do recommend doing the SuperDat update from time to time, to ensure that you are running the latest engine. The Superdat file is also easier to install, as it's just a single .exe file. (You need to be an advanced user to do the DAT update only, as it involves downloading a zip file, unzipping it, stopping services, putting extracted files in place, then starting services again.) Instructions for a SuperDAT update... 3. Right click on the superdat file "sdatxxxx.exe" and choose "Save Target As". Select an appropriate folder on your hard drive, and click "Save". Download commences, and may take sveral minutes, demending on your internet connection's speed. 5. Once the download is complete, use Windows Explorer to goto the folder where you saved the file to, then double-click it to install the update.
