This page contains instructions on how to setup a PC to make a VPN connection to an office equiped with a Cisco router. These instructions are valid for Windows XP and 7 only. Procedure for Windows XP:1. Launch Control Panel (Start, Control Panel) 2. Click the “Switch to Classic View” link in the top left (NOTE: If already in classic view, this option won’t be listed, in which case, skip this step) 3. Double Click “Network Connections” 4. Click “ Create a new connection”. The New Connection wizard will now start. Click NEXT. 5. Select “Connect to the network at my workplace”, then click NEXT. 6. Select “Virtual Private Network connection”, then click NEXT. 7. Type in a name for this connection (eg. “VPN to my work”), then click NEXT. (NOTE: It may then ask you about the “Public Network”... if so, select “Do not dial the initial connection” and click NEXT) 8. Type in the Host name or IP address of the work’s Cisco router. (This can either be your work’s Static IP address, or a name that resolves to your work such as mail.mycompany.com.au), then click NEXT 9. If you want a shortcut icon for this VPN connection to be created on your desktop (recommended), then tick the box. Click FINISHED. Your done! To connect to your work... Just double click the Icon on your desktop (created in step 9). If it's the first time your using the connection, then enter your VPN username & associated password, and make sure you TICK the box to "Save this username and password...". Click CONNECT. NOTE1: This VPN username and password is typically different from your network’s login name and password. See your System’s administrator or I.T. person for your VPN username and password. NOTE2: Although the username is NOT case sensitive, the password IS case sensitive. Procedure for Windows 7: 1. Launch Control Panel (Start, Control Panel) 2. Click the “Small Icons" in the "View By" section if not already selected (top right) 3. Click “Network and Sharing Center” 4. Click “Set up a new connection or network”. 5. Select “Connect to a workplace", then click NEXT. (NOTE: If it asks you if you want to use a connection that you already have, select "No, create a new connection", then click NEXT). 6. Click “Use my Internet connection (VPN) 7. In the "Internet address" field... type in the Host name or IP address of the work’s Cisco router. (This can either be your work’s Static IP address, or a name that resolves to your work such as mail.mycompany.com.au). In the "Destination name" field... type in a name for this connection (eg. "VPN to my work"). TICK the box "Dont connect now...", then Click NEXT. 9. Enter your VPN username & associated password, and click "Remember this password", then click CREATE. NOTE1: This VPN username and password is typically different from your network’s login name and password. See your System’s administrator or I.T. person for your VPN username and password. NOTE2: Although the username is NOT case sensitive, the password IS case sensitive. 10. Click CLOSE. 11. Click "Change adapter settings (top right) 12. Right-click on the connection that you just created, click "Create Shortcut", then click YES 13. Right-click on the connection that you just created, click "Properties" 14. Click on the "Security" tab. 15. Change the Data Encryption to "Optional Encryption...", then click OK. Your done! To connect to your work... Just double click the Icon on your desktop (created in step 12). Click CONNECT. ! |
