NOTE: These instructions are designed for operating systems Pre Windows 2000. Windows 2000, XP and later operating systems have the ability to do automatic updates (see bottom of this page). This page contains instructions on how to update your Windows operating system. It is important to keep your Windows updated, as the updates include "Critical updates" (bug fixes), "Security updates" (to prevent your data is secure from hackers & some viruses), and "Driver updates", which will ensure the smooth running of your peripherals. It is a good idea to run the Windows update at least once a month, or whenever there is a big virus scare that may be exploiting a Windows security vulnerability (Microsoft are very quick to release patches to fix these vulnerabilities.) Procedure: Note. Make sure you are connected to the internet first! Note2: If you are connected to the internet via a Proxy server (this includes SBS Server, Back Office Server etc), then make sure your that your Internet Explorer is configured to allow Http1.1 through proxy servers. Do this in Internet Explorer, by Clicking: Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, and then making sure there is a "tick" in the box next to "Use HTTP1.1 through proxy servers". 1. Launch Windows update, by either going to this page: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com , or, if you are running Windows XP, you can get there by clicking: Start, Control Panel, Windows Update (top left). Note: If it asks you if you want to install software from Microsoft, say YES. 2. Click on "Scan for updates". This may take a few moments. 3. Click on "Review and install updates". In this screen, you can see a list of Updates that are going to be loaded. If you want to remove some of these patches from the install list for this time, then you can click the "Remove" button next to the patch. Note: Some patches must be installed by themselves (ie. without any other patches). If this is the case, you will be prompted to make a choice, and you will need to run the Windows Update procedure for again later, to finish loading all the patches. 4. Click on "Install now" 5. Click on "Accept" when the agreement information box is displayed. The updates will now be downloaded and installed. This can take quite a while, depending upon how many updates are selected, and your connection speed. After all updates are installed, a message will be displayed saying that you need to reboot the computer. Click "Ok" to reboot your machine immediately, or click "Cancel" if you would like to reboot your computer later on. Note: If your computer is a network server, or is a workstation that has shared files, make sure that all other users have closed down their programs before you reboot! Automatic Updates: Note that in Windows 2000 and later operating systems, you can configure the system to do Automatic windows updates. Follow these instructions: Windows 2000: This is configured by clicking: Start, Control Panel, Auto Updates. Set the options. Window XP: Right-click on "My Computer" (either on the desktop, or in the Start menu). Click on the "Auto Updates" tab at the top. Set the options. |
